Vision to Reality: TSMH Launches Its First-Ever Postgraduate Diploma in Psycho-Oncology
The Texas School of Mental Health (TSMH) marked a significant milestone with the induction of the very first batch of its Postgraduate Diploma in Psycho-Oncology (PGDPO) in June 2024. The multi-day program set the stage for aspiring professionals to enter this emerging discipline that bridges mental health and oncology care.
The inaugural sessions featured distinguished leaders including Dr. Girish Lad, Founder & Chairman of TSMH; Dr. Sawsan Al Madhi, Director of TSMH-UAE; and Dr. Narendra Nigalye, Director of TSMH-USA. They shared valuable insights drawn from their expertise in psycho-oncology, internal medicine, and cancer care, motivating students to pursue their academic journey with passion and purpose.
The academic discourse emphasized the multidisciplinary nature of psycho-oncology, bringing together perspectives from oncology, psychiatry, psychology, genetics, nutrition, and complementary medicine. Sessions highlighted the need for integrating medical treatment with psychological care, ensuring patients and families receive holistic support throughout the cancer journey. Discussions also explored how lifestyle, early intervention, and advocacy play a crucial role in improving patient outcomes.
To strengthen the academic experience, the induction included a comprehensive student orientation covering program methodology, course structure, and evaluation systems. Special training was also conducted on TSMH’s Learning Management System (LMS), equipping students with the tools to navigate digital classrooms, access learning resources, and engage in interactive modules. These initiatives aimed at ensuring a smooth transition into the rigorous yet rewarding academic schedule.
The event further underscored TSMH’s vision of creating a global platform for psycho-oncology education, bridging knowledge across countries and healthcare systems. By fostering collaboration among clinicians, mental health professionals, and researchers, the institution continues to shape a workforce prepared to address the psychological, emotional, and social aspects of cancer care.
With this induction, the June 2024 cohort embarks on a transformative journey that blends scientific learning with human empathy. The program once again reaffirmed TSMH’s commitment to developing skilled professionals who can contribute meaningfully to the evolving landscape of cancer care and mental health.
