A Scholar’s Benediction – Dr. G.B. Deglurkar’s Message to the Healers of Tomorrow

Following the heartfelt reflections of Dr. Mahesh Bhagwat and the celebration of India’s first graduating batch, this chapter brings the wise counsel of Dr. G.B. Deglurkar into focus.

Wisdom, when spoken with grace, becomes timeless. At the convocation of the world’s first Post Graduate Diploma in Psycho-Oncology, Dr. G.B. Deglurkar — respected archaeologist, author, and former Chancellor of Deccan College gave a message that felt soulful. His speech was not filled with dramatic words. Instead, it was steady, thoughtful, and filled with wisdom. The kind of wisdom that encourages you to pause, reflect, and realign.

The Life Behind the Words

Dr. Deglurkar has taught at Osmania, Pune, and Nagpur Universities and served as Chancellor of the historic Deccan College. He is known for his extraordinary contribution to Indian art, temple architecture, and iconography. His well- known books include घारापुरी दर्शन, Temple Architecture and Sculpture of Maharashtra, and प्राचीन भारत इतिहास आणि संस्कृती.

Dr.Bhagwat

For his lifelong work, he has received several prestigious honours including the Punyabhushan Award, Vidya Vyas Puraskar, and the Chaturang Lifetime Achievement Award. But on this day,he stood not as a scholar or awardee but as a humble teacher, offering blessings to a new generation of healers.

Your Knowledge Now Belongs to Society

Dr. Deglurkar began by congratulating the graduating students. But more importantly, he reminded them that education is not the end, it is just a beginning. He said, you are now part of society in a new way. The world needs you, and your knowledge must be used to serve.

He encouraged the students to bring peace, strength, and hope to those affected by cancer. Not just through treatment, but through emotional support.

"Treat them with compassion. Be the voice that gives them courage. Help them believe that recovery is possible."

Let Knowledge Be Pure and Purposeful

One of the most beautiful parts of his speech was how he brought in the teachings of India’s ancient wisdom. He spoke about the importance of using knowledge for good not just to succeed, but to serve.

"आपल्या साऱ्या क्रिया ज्ञानावर आधारित असाव्यात आणि ते ज्ञान निर्मळ असावं."

Let all our actions be rooted in knowledge. And let that knowledge be pure.

He reminded the students to continue learning throughout life. He spoke about the idea of Samvaad — the ongoing conversation between teachers and students. Even after graduation, students must stay connected to their mentors and to the values they learned.

"उत्तिष्ठत जाग्रत प्राप्य वरान्निबोधत"

Rise. Awake. Strive to gain the highest knowledge.

Healing Is a Lifelong Path

Dr. Deglurkar’s message was gentle, yet powerful. He did not talk only about careers or achievements. He talked about how to live with purpose. He asked the students to carry forward what they have learned, with humility and care.

He reminded them that they are not just entering a profession. They are stepping into a sacred space where healing happens not just through science, but through presence, empathy, and love. Let your work be guided by knowledge. Let your heart lead with kindness. And let your journey always return to the service of others.
